WerreWorld, book 1

In a fantasy world where werre-beings exist unbeknownst to the mortals around them, our adventure/romance stars a squirrel and the Werre-dog who can’t decide whether to hunt him down or….

Recruited by the Raven (excerpt from) A novel by Kai Jones

Brandewine trusted Abby, and he trusted Brandewine. His instincts trusted her, and they’d never been wrong about anything crucial, except, possibly, whatever had landed him in that tree. If choice had been involved. That realization opened a yawning chasm of uncertainty. If he couldn’t trust himself— No. Leave room for a bit of healthy skepticism in the back of his mind, but reserve crushing self-doubt as the last option. Until he found out more about what was going on. Without alerting Abby or the big kitty. “Good night, Abby,” he called softly.

Abby’s low voice floated back from the captain’s chair. “Good night.”

In the morning, Josh would have to begin Guiding a fledgling Werre. A frightened, confused one in the body of a big cat. Josh’s Novitiate was not a memory he wanted to revisit, but here he was. Where to begin? Calming his mind with a deep, slow breath, he put his palms together over his belly, and let himself reach for the Core, an exercise every new Werre learned. With each full, deep inhalation and every slow exhalation, his muscles relaxed a bit, his pulse slowed, his Squirrel brain, the part of him that was Squirrel no matter the time or situation, calmed until it was simply observing and noting. He inhaled, drawing his palms apart, then up slightly. Exhale slowly, bring them together. Repeating the exercise, his hands drew The Ladder up his torso until with the last exhalation, they met over his heart. As he slipped into relaxation, Josh made a mental note. Adult or not, Danny was a new Werre. He needed to  start where most children started, and follow The Path, which didn’t care how famous you were, how pressed for time, or how much money you had.

Yes, there’s a dog – or more precisely, a woman who is Werre and also a dog (Abby), as well as a man who is Werre and also a squirrel (Josh), and a movie star (Danny)who didn’t know he was a Werre-mountain lion until just recently.
